Dermal Filler or Neurotoxin: Which Option is Best for You?
Dermal fillers add volume to the face. At Farrell Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we offer a comprehensive line of fillers from the Juvederm® and Restylane® families, enabling us to address common concerns such as:
- Facial lines and wrinkles
- Hollow or sunken cheeks
- Depressions underneath the eyes
- Asymmetrical or insubstantial lips
Restylane® Lyft, available at our office, has also been approved for use on the back of the hands. It is the first and currently only dermal filler to be approved for this use.
The dermal fillers at our Mechanicsburg office have been selected for their efficacy and history of safe application. A single treatment can last for six to 18 months.
Neurotoxins
We offer BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®, two of the most trusted and effective neurotoxins on the market. Unlike fillers, which stimulate collagen and elastin production, neurotoxins work to relax muscles, allowing the overlying skin to become smooth.
Neurotoxins can be used to treat:
- Forehead creases
- Lines in between eyebrows
- Crow’s feet
- Nasolabial folds
- Neckbands
In some cases, neurotoxins can also be used to address issues like pebbly chin and skin laxity along the jaw as well.
Both BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® will provide results for three to four months. Results can be maintained through touch-up visits.
Which Option is Best for You?
Dermal fillers and neurotoxins treat different issues. The one that is appropriate for you will be based on your specific concerns, anatomy, and ultimate desires.
During your initial consultation, we will listen carefully to your requests and provide an honest assessment of your best options. This may include a dermal filler, a neurotoxin, or a combination of treatments. It may also include nonsurgical options, such as laser skin resurfacing or a chemical peel, that address issues outside the reach of injectables.
At Farrell Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we take time to understand each patient’s individual needs, allowing us to provide the most suitable treatments. Please call us at 717-732-9000 to schedule your consultation and learn more. Located in Mechanicsburg, we serve all surrounding areas of Pennsylvania.
How Long do Frown Line Fillers Last?
Glabellar lines, also known as frown lines, worry lines, and elevens, are the vertical indentations in between your eyebrows. Surgical options, such as a forehead lift can diminish frown lines, but surgery is neither an appropriate nor an interesting option for every patient.
Fortunately, several non-surgical options, including certain laser treatments, are also very effective on these common wrinkles.
Neuromodulators
Neuromodulators such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are incredibly effective on frown lines. These treatments help to relax the muscles underlying the skin, enabling deep creases between the eyebrows to soften and become less noticeable.
While incredibly effective against frown lines, neuromodulators are temporary and will only produce results for three to four months. Maintenance treatments can be performed as often as you’d like. They will be needed for continued results.
Dermal Fillers
Longer lasting than BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® are dermal fillers. These products contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid that gradually add volume to the treatment areas. Fillers are typically used to add volume to the cheeks, the area around the lips, and similarly fleshy areas, but they can also be useful when used in between the eyebrows.
Frown line fillers like Restylane can produce results for six to eighteen months depending on factors unique to your treatment. As with neuromodulators, maintenance treatments can be scheduled at regular intervals to ensure continuous results.
Are Fillers Safe?
Maintenance treatments can spark the question, “How safe are dermal fillers?” Especially with frequent use. Fortunately, while side-effects are possible, severe reaction is extremely rare and most often linked to allergies.
During your initial consultation at Farrell Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we will carefully review your medical records to help safeguard against adverse reactions.
Redness, swelling, and bruising are common side-effects of dermal fillers. Others, including acne-like skin eruptions and lumps, are possible as well. During your time in our care, we will discuss proper preparation and aftercare to help ensure the most pleasing experience.

What Should I Know About BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neuromodulator. Injected into targeted treatment areas, the active ingredient in BOTOX® Cosmetic interrupts the signals between nerves and muscles, eliminating tension and allowing the overlying skin to smooth.
How Long Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Last?
BOTOX® Cosmetic interrupts signals between the muscles and nerves but does not destroy or damage these connections. Over the course of three to four months, the active ingredient will run its course and additional treatment will be needed to maintain results.
BOTOX® Cosmetic can safely be injected with frequency. Some people choose to have touch-ups performed proactively every few months to ensure aesthetic consistency.
What Areas of the Face can be Treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA approved to treat:
- Forehead lines and creases
- Frown lines (in between the eyebrows)
- Crow’s feet (extending from the corner of the eyes)
- Marionette lines (at the corner of the mouth)
BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used to address neckbands and skin laxity around the jaw.
Depending on your specific concerns, BOTOX® Cosmetic can be used on multiple areas at once. The best way to learn where this treatment may be useful to you is through a one-on-one consultation at Farrell Plastic Surgery & Laser Center.
Is BOTOX® Cosmetic a Dermal Filler?
Dermal fillers add volume to the skin with active ingredients including collagen and hyaluronic acid. Fillers add support to the framework of tissues that give your face its shape. A dermal filler treatment can last for 12 to 24 months.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is not a dermal filler, but it works well in conjunction. Issues addressed by dermal fillers are not addressed by BOTOX® Cosmetic and vice versa. When used together, however, they can produce a noticeably more youthful appearance by addressing multiple signs of aging.
Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Safe?
BOTOX® Cosmetic enjoys a remarkable safety record. A bulk majority of patients are able to receive treatment with little to no issue at all. Some redness, swelling, or tenderness may be present at the injection site, but this should fade, like any bruises, within a few days. During your time in our care, we will provide you with the services and care instructions you’ll need for the most rewarding experience.
