CoolSculpting®: The Best Alternative to Liposuction

CoolSculptingYou can work out regularly and maintain a healthy diet, but that just may not cut it for the excess fat you may be experiencing. Many factors can trigger significant changes to your body causing this extra fat, like childbirth, or aging, and you may still be left with that stubborn fat no matter what you do with your diet and exercise regimen. Farrell Plastic Surgery and Laser Center has the solution to your problems: CoolSculpting®!

What Is Coolsculpting?

CoolSculpting® is a modern and alternative method to liposuction. Like liposuction, it targets excess fat. Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting® eliminates the fat without surgery. Instead of using invasive tools, CoolSculpting® freezes and destroys fat cells, which are then naturally eliminted from your body.

What Is the Coolsculpting Procedure Like?

At the beginning of your CoolSculpting® procedure, you will experience a cold feeling and possibly some mild pressure. You can expect your CoolSculpting treatment to take about an hour at Farrell Plastic Surgery and Laser Center. During the treatment, feel free to take a nap, scroll through your phone, or read a book! Once treatment is complete, you will be able to go back to your daily activities immediately. You will be able to start noticing your CoolSculpting® results after three weeks, with full results taking about two months. This is because it takes time for the dead fat cells to leave your body once they are treated.

Who is a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting?

Most of our CoolSculpting® candidates are looking for the same solution: to get rid of their extra fat and loose skin. CoolSculpting® can treat belly, chin, back, buttocks, upper arms, thighs, and flanks (the back and sides of your belly). To be a great candidate for CoolSculpting®, you should generally be in good health, close to your weight goals, and looking to get rid of your fat with minimal downtime.

Non-Surgical Options for Flawless Skin in Your 50s

Beautiful woman pensioner relaxing on comfortable leather sofa with digital tablet

Aging is inevitable, but looking old doesn’t have to be. At Farrell Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we believe that everyone deserves beautiful skin at every stage of life. If you are noticing more spots and discoloration, deeper wrinkles, a loss of elasticity, increasingly larger pores, or any other changes in skin tone, texture, and appearance, we are here to assess your concerns and help you determine how to safely and effectively restore your skin to its healthiest and most attractive state.

Non-Surgical Skin Improvement

Injectables and fillers are among the most popular options for skin rejuvenation after 50. We offer advanced dermal fillers from the Juvéderm® and Restylane® families to add volume to cheeks, mouth area, temples, tear troughs, and more. We also provide BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® to address fine lines and deep wrinkles from the forehead to the chin.

Another popular injectable is Kybella®, a non-surgical option for submental fat (double chin) that can help restore contours to the jawline. Kybella can be used alone or in combination with skin tightening options to help ensure optimal results.

Regarding non-surgical skin tightening, we offer several safe and effective options, including microneedling, laser services, and Thermage®, a radiofrequency treatment that can be used on the face, neck, and more. Skin laxity is common as we age. Fortunately, several non-invasive options can improve this issue without incisions, sutures, or scars.

One of our specialties is laser medicine, a branch of aesthetic medicine that addresses multiple concerns. Depending on your specific needs, Dr. Deborah Farrell may recommend laser treatments to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, remove sun and age spots, tighten loose skin, eliminate spider veins, and more. A Fellow of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, Dr. Deborah Farrell is pleased to offer a comprehensive range of laser treatments to address multiple concerns.

In addition to these incredible treatments, we are pleased to offer several med spa services, including facials and microdermabrasion. These services can improve skin tone and texture, diminish pore visibility, smooth fine lines, and more – and all without significant downtime. In between other services or as standalone options, our skin care treatments have been specifically selected for their safety and efficacy.

Non-Surgical Skin Tightening with Thermage

portrait of elegant brunette woman in bed

Skin laxity is an unavoidable part of the aging process. While each of us experiences the loss of elasticity a little bit differently, loose skin, wrinkles, and similar signs of aging will eventually appear, even when care is taken to slow the process.

Surgical options for skin tightening, such as facelift surgery, produce reliable and long-lasting results. But these also require a surgical procedure and recovery period, neither of which are ideal for every individual. At Farrell Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we are pleased to offer a range of non-surgical skin tightening options, allowing us to produce firmer, more youthful-looking skin without incisions, sutures, or surgical risks.

How Does Thermage® Work?

Thermage uses radiofrequency energy to gently heat deep layers of the skin. This process separates water molecules from collagen fibers, helping to tighten existing strands while stimulating more production of this skin-firming protein.

Stimulating collagen production works to remodel underlying tissue in the treatment area. This ensures long-lasting results, even after a single treatment. In fact, unlike some other non-surgical skin tightening options, optimal outcomes can often be achieved following one session with Thermage, improving results over six to eight months, and lasting several years.

Thermage is typically used to address signs of facial aging, such as fine lines, deep wrinkles, and sagging skin along the jawline. However, this safe and effective treatment can also smooth and tighten skin on the neck, chest, abdomen, and more, giving it a distinct advantage over options that can be used on the face alone. During your initial consultation, we will carefully evaluate your areas of concern, discuss your skin tightening options, and help you determine if Thermage is the best fit for you.

Thermage is exceptionally effective, producing reliable results with very few risks. Most patients resume normal activities immediately after treatment, though some mild redness and skin tightness may be present for the first one to two days. To ensure your comfort during this time, we will provide you with aftercare instructions, including temporary sun avoidance, which can help to protect the skin against further damage.

Taking Care of Your Skin After a Laser Procedure

Woman happy cleanses the skin with foam in bathroom.

Lasers improve uneven skin tone, mend damaged skin, treat signs of aging such as wrinkles and creases, and make the skin look refreshed and rejuvenated. Lasers can eliminate acne, red spots, visible blood vessels, and similar issues. They can also treat sun damage, including freckles, make skin smoother, and address skin laxity. And to make them more attractive, lasers are noninvasive, can be used on all skin types and tones, and require little to no downtime, but still produce remarkable and long-lasting results.

At Farrell Plastic Surgery and Laser Center, we are pleased to offer the safest and most advanced aesthetic laser procedures available today.

While laser treatments require very little downtime, you can help to improve outcomes and enhance the short recovery period by taking proper care of your skin post-treatment. Below are some suggestions for taking care of your skin after your laser procedure. When you come to our office for treatment, we will also provide you with individualized directions based on factors specific to you and your treatment.

Post Laser Treatment Skin Care

After a cosmetic laser treatment, your skin may feel a bit swollen, sensitive, and irritated. These issues will self-correct within a few days. You can help by applying cold packs and keeping your skin moisturized. Sleeping with your head elevated for a day or two after treatment may also be helpful, though this depends on where you have received treatment.

In addition, you may need to:

  • Use a Gentle Cleanser (Avoid Exfoliants and Harsh Chemicals)
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight as Much as Possible
  • Use an SPF 30+ Sunscreen When Going Outside
  • Keep Skin Clean and Moisturized
  • Stay Hydrated

Laser skin resurfacing causes peeling, much like a sunburn. During this phase, you may have to avoid wearing makeup as well.

We offer a range of laser treatments to address a comprehensive array of issues. Each treatment comes with different aftercare instructions, but most allow for a comfortable return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. During your initial consultation, we can discuss recovery and how you can enhance yours to help ensure you have the best possible experience.

Would you like to learn more about our laser treatments? Call Farrell Plastic Surgery & Laser Center at 717-732-9000 to schedule your initial consultation today. Located in Mechanicsburg, we welcome patients from all nearby areas of Pennsylvania.

What can Fractional Laser Treatment Correct?

Beautiful brunette outdoor

Laser skin resurfacing is a safe and effective way to address several common cosmetic concerns. Most frequently used to correct issues impacting the face and neck, fractional laser treatment can be performed on any part of the body, making it one of the most versatile non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

Fractional lasers use thermal energy to penetrate deeply into the skin, creating columns of damage that stimulate collagen production and the body’s natural healing response. Because they target portions of the skin as opposed to the entire surface area, fractional lasers help to reduce recovery time and increase patient comfort – all without compromising results.

Issues Treated With Fractional Skin Resurfacing

Fractional laser treatment can be used to improve the appearance of skin impacted by:

  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Sun and age spots
  • Uneven texture and tone
  • Acne and surgical scars
  • Large pores
  • Minor laxity

It may take two or more fractional laser treatments to achieve optimal results, particularly for more pronounced issues. However, once desired outcomes have been obtained, they can last for several years.

Designed to be less invasive than many other laser treatments, fractional skin resurfacing requires little downtime. Some redness, swelling, and slight discomfort – similar to a sunburn – may be present for a few days, but these issues should subside quickly with proper care. We will provide specific aftercare instructions to help ensure your recovery is as quick and comfortable as possible. When appropriate, we may suggest professional skincare products to help enhance your experience.

Why Choose Farrell Plastic Surgery & Laser Center

At our Mechanicsburg office, laser skin resurfacing is performed by Dr. Deborah Farrell, a Fellow of the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery and one of Central Pennsylvania’s most respected and experienced laser and cosmetic medicine physicians. Attentive, thorough, and thoughtful, Dr. Farrell will take the time to understand your concerns, carefully assess potential treatment areas, and help you decide if laser skin resurfacing can help you reach your goals.

Please call our office at 717-732-9000 to schedule your initial consultation today. We welcome patients from Harrisburg, Carlisle, and all surrounding areas of Pennsylvania.

June is Men’s Health Month

Successful,Man,Raising,Arms,After,Cross,Track,Running,On,Summer

June is Men’s Health Month, offering a perfect time to reflect on the ways you take care of your body. There are several reasons to target men’s health: around 60% of adult males in the United States are overweight. What’s more, only around 40% of men are willing to see a doctor when they have a worrisome medical condition, and just slightly over half undergo yearly physicals.

According to the CDC, more than 400,000 men develop a cardiovascular disease each year, and 700,000 develop cancers, 230,000 of which are prostate, the second most deadly type of cancer for men. Lifestyle choices play a role in these things, as do genetics, environmental factors, and more. These same factors can have a profound impact on physical appearance and comfort as well.

Cosmetic Treatments for Men

Seeing your PCP for yearly examinations after the age of 40 is an important part of taking care of yourself. So, too, are taking steps to eat healthily and stay active. Even with these efforts, however, you may not be able to reach all of your aesthetic goals. This is where we come in.

We are pleased to offer a range of services for men, each designed to address specific concerns. Popular options include:

  • Male Breast Reduction. Gynecomastia is the medical name for excess glandular tissue or fat accumulations in men that produce the appearance of breasts. Male breast reduction eliminates bulk to restore definition and masculinity to the chest
  • CoolSculpting®. A non-surgical alternative to liposuction, CoolSculpting® uses cryolipolysis to freeze and permanently destroy fat cells, allowing the body to remove them naturally. The procedure can be used nearly anywhere on the body, with many men targeting the flanks, abdomen, back, and upper arms
  • Brow Lift. Sagging eyebrows and deep forehead creases are common with age. A brow lift can smooth the forehead, lift the eyebrows, and restore an alert, attentive, and attractive appearance to the upper face
  • Eyelid Surgery. Lower blepharoplasty removes bags, dark circles, and wrinkles from the lower lids and below the eyes. Upper blepharoplasty eliminates eyelid wrinkles and lifts droopy upper lids

In addition to these services, we offer several treatments for aging skin, many of which can be used in combination to address multiple issues at the same time.

  • Dull and aged skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage

GentleWaves® treatment can be performed on nearly any part of the body, including delicate and sensitive areas such as the face and neck, décolletage, and hands.

Gentle and Effective

Many non-surgical cosmetic treatments require repeat sessions for optimal results. With GentleWaves®, it may take four to eight treatments to achieve the most noticeable outcomes.

Because there is no downtime, discomfort, or recovery associated with GentleWaves®, treatment can be performed once or twice weekly without any issue. Subtle improvements in the appearance of the skin may be noticeable following every treatment, but it may be a few weeks before more pronounced results are perceivable. There is no redness, peeling, increased sensitivity, or pain with GentleWaves®. No recovery period, downtime, or special aftercare is needed following treatment. Many patients come in over lunch or in between errands, knowing they can resume all normal activities without complication as soon as treatment has been completed. Convenient and effective, GentleWaves® offers reliable results that can last for several months at a time.

GentleWaves® is a wonderful solution for some of our patients, but not the right fit for others. Am I a Good Candidate for Juvederm Voluma?

Happy,50s,Middle,Aged,Woman,Model,Touching,Face,Skin,Looking

Juvéderm® Voluma™ is a dermal filler that has been specifically formulated to address mid-face volume loss. Ideal for restoring a softer, fuller, more youthful appearance to the cheeks, Voluma™ can also be used to produce desirable contours to the chin, helping to lift and enhance the overall facial profile.

The best candidates for Voluma™ are people experiencing skin laxity and volume loss in the cheek area, as well as those with a “weak” or poorly-defined chin. As a non-surgical treatment, Voluma™ does not require any special qualifications, though some skin conditions may interfere with candidacy. The best way to determine if this treatment is right for you is through a one-on-one consultation with our experienced cosmetic physician, Dr. Deborah Farrell.

How Long Does Voluma™ Last?

Voluma™ injections can last for up to two years. We can perform touch-up treatments to help extend results as needed. We can also combine Voluma™ with other Juvéderm® products to address fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity elsewhere on the face. During your initial consultation, we will discuss all of your options to make sure we are addressing each area of concern.

Safe and well-tolerated, there is little to no downtime associated with Voluma™. Depending on your comfort level, it is possible to return to work and resume most normal activities immediately after treatment. There may be some residual soreness, redness, and bruising around the injection sites. This should neither be limiting nor long-lasting. In most cases, these issues resolve within a few days. If they fail to resolve or if you are not in love with your results, treatment with Juvéderm® Voluma™ is reversible.

At Farrell Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we take time to truly understand the needs of each patient, allowing us to provide the services best suited to correct individual concerns. If you have been considering a non-surgical cosmetic treatment, we encourage you to give us a call at 717-732-9000 to schedule a consultation at our Mechanicsburg office today. We welcome patients from Harrisburg, Carlisle, and all surrounding areas of Pennsylvania.

How to Eliminate a Double Chin

Double chin, medically known as submental fat, can create an uneven, undefined, and unattractive appearance that impacts the jawline and, in some cases, the entire face. Diet and exercise are not always enough to address this issue, leaving many people wondering how best to deal with a double chin. Fortunately, there are a few very effective options – both surgical and non-surgical – that can be used to eliminate submental fat and restore an ideally contoured and defined jaw and chin.

Surgical Options

Surgical options for double chin include:

  • Neck Lift Surgery. With this option, loose and sagging skin along with excess fat deposits are removed from the neck, jawline, and chin
  • Neck Liposuction. With this option, excess fat is removed from the chin through gentle and targeted suction

Surgical options can be incredibly effective at eliminating submental fat, but they come with some risks and will require a short recovery period. During your initial consultation, we will carefully assess your areas of concern and provide honest information about what you can expect through surgical treatment.

Non-Surgical Options

Kybella®

Kybella® is the first injectable treatment for double chin. Safe, effective, and non-invasive, Kybella® works to dissolve submental fat, allowing for it to be removed through the body’s natural pathways of elimination. Because it is non-surgical, results may take up to six weeks to be realized, but the changes brought about by Kybella® are permanent. What’s more, this double chin treatment does not require downtime, incisions, or detailed recovery instructions, making it ideal for people who want to achieve ideal results but are not interested in surgery.

CoolSculpting®

CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical, non-invasive option to effectively and safely treat double chins. This option also does not require downtime, and allows fat to be removed through the body’s natural pathways. It typically takes several months for the full effect to be realized.

In addition, we are pleased to offer non-surgical treatments such as Thermage®, a radiofrequency skin tightening solution, along with a variety of laser skin treatments that may be useful in restoring optimal contours to the neck and chin.

During your initial consultation at our Mechanicsburg office, we can help you determine if Kybella® is the best solution for your needs.

Please call Farrell Plastic Surgery & Laser Center at 717-732-9000 to schedule your consultation today. We welcome patients from Hogestown, Shepherdstown, and all nearby areas of Pennsylvania.
