If you are dealing with spider veins, sclerotherapy is one of the most common ways to treat them. It is a minimally invasive procedure that can improve how your legs look and feel.
Dr. Deborah Farrell performs sclerotherapy at Farrell Laser & Aesthetic Medicine Center in Mechanicsburg, using her expertise to help patients treat unwanted veins. Here’s what you can expect during the procedure and in the days that follow.
How Sclerotherapy Works
During sclerotherapy, Dr. Farrell injects a solution directly into the vein you want treated. This solution irritates the inside of the vein just enough to make it close off. Over time, your body absorbs the closed vein, and blood naturally finds its way through nearby healthy veins.
The procedure usually takes less than an hour, and no anesthesia is needed. You might feel some brief stinging or cramping during the injection, but most people find it very manageable. How many veins we treat in one session depends on their size, location, and how your legs respond.
Right After the Procedure
You’ll be able to walk around right after your appointment, and light activity is encouraged to help with healing. You’ll want to hold off on anything too strenuous for a short time. We’ll go over those details with you before you leave.
It’s normal to notice some redness, mild swelling, or slight bruising where the injections were done. These side effects are usually temporary and should clear up within a few days to a week.
When to Expect Results
You will not see results right away after sclerotherapy, but most people start noticing changes within a few weeks. Smaller spider veins usually fade first. If we’re treating larger or deeper veins, it can take a few months for them to fully disappear.
Some veins may need more than one session, especially if they’re stubborn or if you have several areas you want us to treat. We’ll talk with you about what kind of results to expect and how many treatments might make the most sense for your goals.
