How Does CoolSculpting® Really Work?

CoolSculpting® is one of the most trusted non-surgical treatments for reducing stubborn fat, but many people still have questions about how it works. Dr. Deborah M. Farrell brings years of experience in aesthetic medicine to every treatment plan at Farrell Laser & Aesthetic Medicine Center. Here’s a closer look at how CoolSculpting® works and what you can expect when you come in for a session at our office in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

The Science Behind CoolSculpting®

CoolSculpting® works through a process called cryolipolysis. It uses controlled cooling to freeze fat cells under the skin without damaging the skin itself or the surrounding tissue.

When fat cells are exposed to cold at the right temperature for the right amount of time, they freeze and break down. Over the next few weeks and months, your body naturally clears those damaged fat cells through the lymphatic system.

The treatment is FDA-cleared and has been studied for safety and effectiveness. That said, it’s not a weight-loss method. It’s meant for people who are close to their goal weight but want to reduce fat in areas like the abdomen, flanks, upper arms, or under the chin.

What to Expect During Treatment

During a CoolSculpting® session, your provider places an applicator on the treatment area. You’ll feel cold and some pressure at first, but the area typically goes numb after a few minutes. Each cycle lasts about 35 to 60 minutes, depending on the applicator and the area being treated.

After the session, you should be able to return to your normal activities right away. It’s common to have some redness, tingling, or swelling, but those effects are usually temporary. Results will appear gradually over the next one to three months.
