Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is one of the procedures most requested by our patients. Often, patients want to improve their tired appearance and remove the bags and excess skin under their eyes.
When looking in the mirror, eyes are a focal point. As years pass, we begin to notice lines, bags, and sagging skin around them. A consultation can be scheduled to discuss both the upper and lower eyelids, as well as areas around the eyes, including the eyebrows, which do have an effect on appearance. The changes that bother you most can be identified, so recommendations can be made, and a plan determined.
Surgery typically involves removing the excess skin from the upper eyelids and the bulging fat from the lower eyelids. The incisions are hidden in natural creases, so scarring is generally not an issue. The eyebrow position needs to be considered as well, since low brows can also make people look tired. The brow should be at level of the orbital bone in men, and positioned above with a gentle arch in women. Different methods of brow lifting are recommended, depending upon the amount of correction needed and hair style.
Recently, surgeons have become more aware of the effects of loss of volume contributing to the aging of the face. Fat grafting has been an excellent adjunct to eyelid surgery, improving the results in the areas around the eyes. Sun damage and loss of elasticity in the eyelid skin can be addressed with laser treatments and skin care, as well.
After surgery, patients feel rejuvenated and look much younger, with an open-eye appearance. Rest and limitations of activities is important for 1 to 2 weeks following surgery, to limit swelling and bruising. Although no one can guarantee a specific outcome with surgery, most patients are very satisfied with their results. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can transform your overall look!
