Numerous skincare products are on the market today, making it difficult to know which ones are beneficial and which are not. With so many different options, most people have to practice trial and error before finding the products that work for their skin. However, some of these skincare products can damage your skin barrier. To avoid causing harm to your skin, these are the products we recommend avoiding.
Skincare Products to Avoid
At Farrell Plastic Surgery P.C., we recommend avoiding the following products and ingredients:
- Coarse exfoliants: Exfoliating can be a wonderful way to gently slough off dead skin cells, but some products are rougher on your skin than others. The more abrasive the scrub is, the more likely you’ll end up with micro-tears in the skin. While your body is meant to heal itself, too many of these tears can cause visible damage over time. We recommend gentle and chemical exfoliants if your skin responds well to them.
- Heavy fragrances: Synthetic scents can be irritating to the skin. It’s important to do a patch test on your skin before committing to a product, just in case of an allergic reaction. However, even if you’re not allergic, fragrant products can still dry out and damage your skin if used in excess.
- High chemical concentrations: From alcohol to formaldehyde, heavy chemical content can dry out the skin, disrupt your skin’s barrier, and even potentially contribute to cancer.
- Mineral oil: The side effects of mineral oil are fairly mild compared to the other products on this list; however, this oil has been known to clog pores in certain products.
